Two of my favorite Shade Cobain beats… ill producer out of Pittsburgh that’s been doin’ it for a while, gettin’ some love now but not as much as he should be, especially outside city limits… one is a Mary J Blige flip that I would kill to get, second is off his new instrumental album “Anti-Love Theory” droppin’ 10.10.10. Get hip, he’s got a lot of material out, he’s a nice dude, you can look forward to some interviews or videos or SOMETHING involving him in the future. Check out his new group Varsity Squad w/ Jon Quest & Beedie as well. SALUTE!!!
Danny Brown is a crazy person: Not just the typical “Yea I’m in the booth, I’m crazy with the flow” rapper, but the “Jesus, he sounds like he just walked out of an asylum” type. A Detroit rapper who came to my attention via his verses on “Contra” with Elzhi and “Dilla Bot vs. The Hybrid” on J Dilla’s posthumous Jay Stay Paid project, Brown has a wholly unique style: a voice that sounds like a Tex Avery cartoon, punchline after obscure punchline, one of the weirdest senses of humor in hip-hop- along with real rhyme skill, an ear for off-kilter production, heavy Detroit imagery and a clear insight into the lifestyles of all around him. In 2010, he’s dropped the 4th installment of his Detroit State of Mind mixtape series, his free full-length album The Hybrid, a slew of low-key projects, a killer guest spot on Black Milk’s Album Of The Year, and now his collaborative album with G-Unit’s Tony Yayo, “Hawaiian Snow”. All are of the utmost quality. Danny took the time to answer a few questions for us, so pay attention.
I always loved Boards of Canada… I’m surprised more producers / musicians / DJs I know aren’t familiar with them…
Boards of Canada are an extremely reclusive duo signed to Warp Records responsible for 3 really innovative albums of ethereal beats and instrumentals. Music Has The Right To Children, their first album, mixes ambience and dream soundscape with straight-up midtempo beats; the second, Geogaddi, sounds like a PBS nature special on cough syrup that’s been sitting in the sun too long;
I want one of these illustrations framed and hanging up in my wall.
